Breath of Europe (voices, stories, traditions of bagpipes) - Jean-Pierre Van Hees from Belgium

In this episode we meet Jean-Pierre Van Hees – one of the world’s foremost specialists of the baroque musette and an authority on European bagpipes. As a performer with leading ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Het Orkest van de XVIIIe Eeuw, and Le Concert des Nations, he has brought the refined sound of the musette to the world’s greatest concert halls.

Jean-Pierre Van Hees is also a pioneer in pedagogy: he founded the very first musette class in Brussels (1989) and introduced the instrument into higher education at Leuven University College of Arts (1999). As a scholar, his monumental book Un infini sonore remains the most comprehensive study of the bagpipe family ever written, richly illustrated and accompanied by recordings.

In this conversation, we explore:

What makes the musette both a bagpipe and something beyond it.

The place of Belgian bagpipes in Europe’s diverse traditions.

Challenges of bringing the musette into academia.

His research journey across hundreds of bagpipes worldwide.

The future of bagpipes in music and culture.

We even discuss why the "musette de cour" shouldn’t really be called "de cour…" but I admit, I keep forgetting to call it just musette as my guest suggested – I’ve simply got too used to it 😅
